Many users were afraid that Google was collecting personal search data to use in their services (such as Google Suggest, etc.)

Well, be assured, Google is not out to be Big Brother. Google will be making any collected user data anonymous, and unable to trace back to you personally.

Regardless of the fact that I was going to keep using Chrome anyway, I'm glad Google decided to do it this way.

If they collected "data" ... I'm sure it wouldn't be personal information, just random information about your hardware, and program logs from Google Chrome.
